Voices Across the Americas

Saturday May 18th  2 pm
Bethel  AME Church       1525 Michigan Ave    Buffalo
Sunday May 19th   7 pm
Orchard Park Presbyterian Church  4369 S Buffalo St   Orchard Park
 Featuring
Frostiana  by  Randall Thompson based on poems by  Robert Frost
and music from West Side Story
as well as music from Canada, USA & South America
When   the Orchard Park Chorale performs its Voices Across the
Americas
concerts on  Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19, the chorale will be joined by
a combined  Honors Choir formed with representatives from  area high schools including City Honors, Williamsville East and Buffalo Arts Academy.
The  program  Voices Across
the Americas
showcases a variety of song styles reflecting North and South
American culture and traditions. The centerpiece is “Frostiana,” a collection
of Robert Frost’s  poems set to music by renowned choral composer Randall
Thompson. Selections  from Sondheim and Bernstein’s “West Side Story” will
include solos by OPC  tenor Ben Streeter and soprano Jessica Wheaton. A French
Canadian folksong “J’entends le Mouin” (“I Hear the Mill”) echoes the sound of
a working  millwheel with its staccato rhythm. “Te Quiero” (“I Adore You”) is a
popular Argentinian love song with lyrics written by Uruguayan poet Mario
Benedetti. “Salmo 150” (“Psalm 150”) is a stylish, contemporary Brazilian
song.    A contemporary work by composer Peter Willsher, “Everyone Suddenly
Burst Out  Singing,” is based on Siegfried Sassoon’s poem “Everyone Sang,”
written in 1918  to commemorate the end of World War I.
Tickets are available from chorale members, at the door or through this website.

The Orchard Park Chorale has become a consistent source of  vibrant choral performances, a beacon of civic pride and opportunity for all in the Southtowns. The chorale is a bridge to the greater WNY community through shared music making, a cultural ambassador with an engaged membership, and a model of collaborative and cooperative involvement with other performing arts organizations.

The Chorale regularly performs major works: the Requiem  by Faure, Part I of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata as well as music from Broadway, and European masters. Our outreach activities are Summer Sings, open rehearsals, and vocal workshops.

The Chorale was founded in 1975 by Arthur Whitcher with Carl Burgwardt as its first music director. Subsequent music directors have included Carl Druba, Marcia Giambrone, John Fleischmann Jr., Tim Kennedy and our current director
Kathleen Keenan-Takagi.

The Chorale collaborates with many ensembles, recently with the Orchard Park High School String Orchestra and with the Cathedral Brass. This spring we have a collaborate concert with students from Buffalo Public Schools  and Williamsville East.

The Chorale provides a continuing choral group for all who have a serious desire to participate in a common musical experience.  It is our goal to bring enjoyment and appreciation of beautiful music to our members, our community and Western New York. Expenses of the Chorale are met by ticket sales, patron and program ads, membership dues, special projects and  with cultural funding from the 2013 adopted Erie County Budget, Mark C. Poloncarz, County Executive, and  the New York State Council  on the Arts (NYSCA) with the support of Governor  Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, administered by Arts Services  Initiative of  Western New York.

A multi-generational, multi-community chorale that brings people together to create and enjoy great music.
